Spode is one of the most recognizable names in ceramic collectibles, but it is their Spode Blue Italian collection that really put them on the map. This collection was first created in 1816, and launched Spode into the leading position in the ceramic market. Even today, it is their most collected range of works, and it is still in production.
If you're a collector, or want to collect, here's what you need to know about the history of the Spode Blue Italian collection and the company who made it.
The History Of The Spode Blue Italian Collection
Blue and white china was extremely popular in Europe and the UK throughout the 1700's. The majority of the china actually came from China. It was imported for decades and flooded the market. But in 1773, the supply of the imported china slowed down considerably. Demand for it was still very high, and there consequently was a huge gap in the marketplace. This left room for an enterprising person to step in and fill it.
Josiah Spode was just that person. Spode was an English potter and, in 1784, he mastered the process for reproducing these famous blue and white designs. In fact, he set the standard for all English porcelain.
Spode used hand-engraved copper plates to transfer designs on to tissue paper, and then used underglaze printing to create his pieces. At first, he reproduced the popular Chinese designs on to his porcelain. But it didn't take long before he began coming up with his very own signature designs... Willow, in 1790, Blue Tower in 1814, and then the Spode Blue Italian collection in 1816.
The Spode Blue Italian quickly became iconic. All of the designs were inspired by the Italian countryside. Buyers were impressed with the quality and detail of the figures amidst pastoral scenes or Roman ruins. Spode framed each design with a Imari Oriental border, which further added to the intricacy and attention to detail that his works became famous for.
The Spode Blue Italian collection became famous not only in Europe but also in America, where new settlers valued their pieces because they reminded them of home. Copycat versions soon appeared, but disappeared just s quickly. No-one could reproduce the gorgeous detail that Josiah Spode put in to each and every piece.
Still manufactured today, the Spode Blue Italian [http://spodeblueitalian.org/] collection has little differences here and there that make collecting them fun. One piece may have three sheep in a field, while another may only show one sheep in the same field... it all depends on the whimsy of the artist. This means that collectors with the same pieces still may have differences in the actual design!
