Since the early 20th century, many European countries started copying each others design and shapes of furniture. Italy too was a victim of piracy in Furniture designs. Italian designers started coming up with innovative designs and very high upscale furniture products. This led to lot of development in Furniture Design space.
Italian designers became so famous across the globe that they started selling furniture out of Italy in many countries like United States and Japan. Italy became the hub for Interior design, urban design and fashion design. Italy is the global trendsetter in furniture design and innovation. Not only they have great design schools but also the culture for grooming their upcoming designers.
Ever since 1970 the furniture and other fashion products started to get logo-ed "Made in Italy". People were ready to high price for such products. Gucci, Armani, Prada, Versace and Moshino made big names in the fashion industry. Interior design in Italy grew to height of innovation during late 1990s. Designers like Knoll, Le Corbusier and Bauhaus from other parts of Europe also made their impact globally.
Today European furniture has become very synonymous with Italian furniture. Many companies like Tonin Casa, Knoll, Rossetto, VIG Furniture get their furniture manufactured in Italy and ship it to different parts of the world. Although it comes at high price, it is wanted everywhere in the world. You can't beat the Italian fine grain leather furniture.
They not only experiment with the materials used in making the furniture but also with the shapes of furniture they made. The modern European furniture material today ranges from the stainless steel to acrylic and new fibers. Even the new alloys have made an easy way into their furniture design. In terms of materials, they experiment from pleather, Naugahyde to fine grain Italian Leather.
Bauhaus from Germany has left a significant mark on furniture and architecture design. The current Bauhaus school of design is one of the best in the design school in the world.
Most of the furniture that gets made in Europe now gets shipped to American ports. New York and LA are the biggest ports to receive European furniture containers. Most of these furniture makes their way in to the pricey American Homes. European beds, dining tables, designer chairs, mirrors, entertainment centers, buffets are the most sought after items in the America.
Since they cater to modern design and are very innovative in shape, you really can't miss it in a home. To cater to the lower side of the market, there are cheaper reproductions from China too. Although they look similar from far but you can really the difference when you are close to it.
