Top 10 Most Magnificent Trees in the World

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 02 November 2011 0 komentar
"A tree is a wonderful living organism which gives shelter, food,
warmth and protection to all living things. It even gives shade to
those who wield an axe to cut it down"
– Buddha.

There are probably hundreds of majestic and magnificent trees in the world – of these, some are particularly special:

10. Lone Cypress in Monterey

Buffeted by the cold Pacific Ocean wind, the scraggly Lone Cypress [wiki] (Cupressus macrocarpa) in Pebble Beach, Monterey Peninsula, California, isn’t a particularly large tree. It makes up for its small size, however, with its iconic status as a stunningly beautiful tree in splendid isolation, framed by an even more beautiful background of the Pacific Ocean.

9. Circus Trees

As a hobby, bean farmer Axel Erlandson [wiki] shaped trees – he pruned, bent, and grafted trees into fantastic shapes and called them "Circus Trees." For example, to make this "Basket Tree" arborsculpture, Erlandson planted six sycamore trees in a circle and then grafted them together to form the diamond patterns.

Erlandson was very secretive and refused to reveal his methods on how to grow the Circus Trees (he even carried out his graftings behind screens to protect against spies!) and carried the secrets to his grave.

The trees were later bought by millionaire Michael Bonfante, who transplanted them to his amusement park Bonfante Gardens in Gilroy in 1985

8. Giant Sequoias: General Sherman

Giant Sequoias [wiki] (Sequoiadendron giganteum), which only grow in Sierra Nevada, California, are the world’s biggest trees (in terms of volume). The biggest is General Sherman [wiki] in the Sequoia National Park – one behemoth of a tree at 275 feet (83.8 m), over 52,500 cubic feet of volume (1,486 m³), and over 6000 tons in weight.

General Sherman is approximately 2,200 years old – and each year, the tree adds enough wood to make a regular 60-foot tall tree. It’s no wonder that naturalist John Muir said "The Big Tree is Nature’s forest masterpiece, and so far as I know, the greatest of living things."

For over a century there was a fierce competition for the title of the largest tree: besides General Sherman, there is General Grant [wiki] at King’s Canyon National Park, which actually has a
larger circumference (107.5 feet / 32.77 m vs. Sherman’s 102.6 feet / 31.27 m).

In 1921, a team of surveyors carefully measured the two
giants – with their data, and according to the complex American Forestry Association system of judging a tree, General Grant should have been award the title of largest tree – however, to simplify the matter, it was later determined that in this case, volume, not point system, should be the determining factor.

7. Coast Redwood: Hyperion and Drive-Thru Trees

There is another sequoia species (not to be confused with Giant Sequoia) that is quite remarkable: the Coast Redwood [wiki] (Sequoia sempervirens), the tallest trees in the world.

The reigning champion is a tree called Hyperion in the Redwood National Park, identified by researcher Chris Atkins and amateur naturalist Michael Taylor in 2006. Measuring over 379 feet (155.6 115 m) tall, Hyperion beat out the previous record holder Stratosphere Giant [wiki] in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park (at 370 feet / 112.8 m).

The scientists aren’t talking about the exact location of Hyperion: the terrain is difficult, and they don’t want a rush of visitors to come and trample the tree’s root system.

[Image: The Stratosphere Giant - still an impressive specimen, previously the world's tallest tree until dethroned by Hyperion in 2006.]

That’s not all that’s amazing about the Coast Redwood: there are four giant California redwoods big enough that you can drive your car through them!

The most famous of the drive-through trees is the Chandelier Tree [wiki] in Leggett, California. It’s a 315 foot tall redwood tree, with a 6 foot wide by 9 foot tall hole cut through its base in the 1930s.

6. Chapel-Oak of Allouville-Bellefosse

Chapel-Oak of Allouville-Bellefosse

Chapel-Oak of Allouville-Bellefosse

The Chêne-Chapelle (Chapel-Oak) of Allouville-Bellefosse is the most famous tree in France – actually, it’s more than just a tree: it’s a building and a religious monument all in one.

In 1669, l’Abbe du Detroit and du Cerceau decided to build a chapel in (at that time) a 500 years old or so oak (Quercus robur) tree made hollow by a lightning bolt. The priests built a small altar to the Virgin Mary. Later on, a second chapel and a staircase were added.

Now, parts of the tree are dead, the crown keeps becoming smaller and smaller every year, and parts of the tree’s bark, which fell off due to old age, are covered by protective oak shingles. Poles and cables support the aging tree, which in fact, may not live much longer. As a symbol, however, it seems that the Chapel-Oak of Allouville-Bellefosse may live on forever.

5. Quaking Aspen: Pando (The Trembling Giant)

4. Montezuma Cypress: The Tule Tree

Close-up of the tree’s gnarled trunk. Local legends say that you can make out animals like jaguars and elephants in the trunk, giving the tree the nickname of "the Tree of Life" (Image credit: jvcluis [flickr])

El Árbol del Tule [wiki] ("The Tule Tree") is an especially large Montezuma cypress (Taxodium mucronatum) near the city of Oaxaca, Mexico. This tree has the largest trunk girth at 190 feet (58 m) and trunk diameter at 37 feet (11.3 m). The Tule tree is so thick that people say you don’t hug this tree, it hugs you instead!

For a while, detractors argued that it was actually three trees masquerading as one – however, careful DNA analysis confirmed that it is indeed one magnificent tree.

In 1994, the tree (and Mexican pride) were in jeopardy: the leaves were sickly yellow and there were dead branches everywhere- the tree appeared to be dying. When tree "doctors" were called in, they diagnosed the problem as dying of thirst. The prescription? Give it water. Sure enough, the tree soon recovered after a careful watering program was followed.

3. Banyan Tree: Sri Maha Bodhi Tree

Banyan tree

If you were thinking that the Banyan tree looks like the trees whose roots snake through the ruins of the Ta Prohm temple like tentacles of the jungle (Lara Croft, anyone?) at Ankor, Cambodia , you’d be right!

Banyan tree (or is it silk-cotton tree?) in the ruins of Ta Prohm, Ankor, Cambodia

One of the most famous species of Banyan, called the Sacred Fig [wiki] or Bo tree, is the Sri Maha Bodhi [wiki] tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is said that the tree was grown from a cutting from the original tree under which Buddha became enlightened in the 6th century BC.

Planted in 288 BC, it is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world, with a definitive planting date!

2. Bristlecone Pine: Methuselah and Prometheus, the Oldest Trees in the World.

Methuselah Grove

Bristlecone pine grove in which Prometheus grew

Stump of the Prometheus Tree

The oldest living tree in the world is a White Mountains, California, bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) named Methuselah [wiki], after the Biblical figure who lived to 969 years old. The Methuselah tree, found at 11,000 feet above sea level, is 4,838 years old – it is not only the oldest tree but also the oldest living non-clonal organism in the world.

Before Methuselah was identified as the world’s oldest tree by Edmund Schulman in 1957, people thought that the Giant Sequoias were the world’s oldest trees at about 2,000 years old. Schulman used a borer to obtain a core sample to count the growth rings of various bristlecone pines, and found over a dozen trees over 4,000 years old.

The story of Prometheus [wiki] is even more interesting: in 1964, Donald R. Currey [wiki], then a graduate student, was taking core samples from a tree named Prometheus. His boring tool broke inside the tree, so he asked for permission from the US Forest Service to cut it down and examine the full cross section of the wood. Surprisingly the Forest Service agreed! When they examined the tree, Prometheus turned out to be about 5,000 years old, which would have made it the world’s oldest tree when the scientist unwittingly killed it!

1. Baobab

The amazing baobab [wiki] (Adansonia) or monkey bread tree can grow up to nearly 100 feet (30 m) tall and 35 feet (11 m) wide. Their defining characteristic: their swollen trunk are actually water storage – the baobab tree can store as much as 31,700 gallon (120,000 l) of water to endure harsh drought conditions.

Baobab trees are native to Madagascar (it’s the country’s national tree!), mainland Africa, and Australia. A cluster of "the grandest of all" baobab trees (Adansonia grandidieri) can be found in the Baobab Avenue, near Morondava, in Madagascar:

Top 10 Sexiest Women 2011 (FHM 2011)

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
1. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley — Foxy Model

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the delightful Victoria's Secret model from Plymouth in Devon, is hot. So hot that she's replaced Megan Fox in Transformers 3. It's just like a sexy version of David and Goliath - the up and coming Rosie toppled FHM's former Sexiest Woman In The World, for the very role that made her famous. Technically, Megan Fox left of her own accord, but you know what we're getting at.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has modeled for a wide variety of brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Ralph Lauren, Burberry, DKNY and Top Shop. She has even been on the cover of Vogue and done some very amazing things as a Victoria's Secret model, leading us to eagerly anticipate the new VS show each year. On top of a bunch of other modelling commitments she was also in the 2010 Pirelli Calendar shot by Terry Richardson, and was nude cuddling a some sort of sloth to her chest. As you do.

Unfortunately for us, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has been linked with all kinds of man-folk. The 23-year-old dated Ronnie Wood's youngest son, Kylie's ex-Oliver Martinez and most recently, the stubbly-faced 'arrd man Jason Statham. But on the plus-side, Rosie made an amazingly sexy video for Agent Provocateur about a boyfriend that forgets Valentines day.

2. Katy Perry — Curiously cute

Sexuality-wise, the jury’s out. Katy Perry kissed a girl. She liked it. And then she faced a barrage of criticism from both stuffy conservatives and a backlash from the gay community. Needless to say their blood would rush to our trousers if we ever caught a glimpse of that – especially as she’s said she has a girl-crush on Scarlett Johansson.

Although such debauchery would probably make her devil-dodging parents explode in a rage bigger than when Russell Brand proposed to her! You cant help but wonder if she’s spent the past 25 years wondering if such thoughts would see her banished to hell (But that is where all the fun people go right?)

Katy Perry's ‘alternate’ style draws attention when she’s not on stage with our personal favorites being her range of PVC mini dresses that cling in all the right places.

Her place as one of pop’s hottest new faces already seems assured. Debut album One Of The Boys sold over a million copies, as did follow-up Teenage Dream and, with saucily attired live performances regularly playing to sell-out crowds, her success shows sign of slowing down. In short, Katy Perry is the 21st Century Britney Spears. Only with more musical attitude, a less conventional look and a healthier mental state.

3. Rihanna — Bajan beauty

If you thought the Caribbean was populated with people who spend their days loafing about drinking rum and eating pineapple, you’re wrong and possibly a bit racist. Rihanna has had four albums in her short career, a string of number ones and sell out world tours.

Her exotic, elfin looks and penchant for wearing PVC cat suits has cemented her place in our hearts. There is also the small matter of Umbrella her dangerously catchy mega hit which left men across the world surreptitiously tapping there feet while nursing erections and flicking between the music channels to catch the bit in the video where she gets water chucked on her.

With 11 million albums sold world wide, and the full might of Jay-Z’s Def Jam records behind her, Rihanna can do no wrong. Woman want to be her and men want be with her... or at least smell her hair in a lift.

4. Megan Fox — Winning Debut

Megan Fox surely can't be human, because there is no woman alive who could have looked as good she did bent over a 1976 Chevrolet Camaro in Transformers. Well, except Rosie Huntington-Whiteley perhaps, who the character of Micheala Banes has transformed into for Michael Bay's big robot epic threequel.

But that doesn't matter because she launched her career out of nowhere and landed at the forefront of every teenage boy's dreams, after two very jiggly performances in Transformers and Transformers 2, so we're sure she can claw her way back to the top.

Aside from her time spent being chased by Hasbro merchandise, Megan has starred in Jennifer's Body - basically an excuse to dress her as a cheerleader and pan over her body. The other thing synonymous with Jennifer's Body was the leaked pictures Megan Fox emerging from a lake, soaking wet with no clothes on and just her nipples covered.

Recently she has appeared in comic book adaptation Jonah Hex, where she plays a gun totting prostitute and has also replaced Victoria Beckham as the body for Armani underwear.

Sadly, this FHM favourite married her long time on/off boyfriend Brian Austin Greene in 2010 at a secret wedding. But forget her marriage, because Megan Fox’s greatest achievement to date has to be her number one slot as FHM Sexiest Woman In The World 2008.

5. Olivia Wilde — Real name: Cockburn

You know who Olivia Wilde is. She’s the girl who sent ratings for The O.C. absolutely batshit when word got out that she was going to rub taste buds with Mischa Barton. And rub them they did, in a showpiece scene that sits alongside Anna Friel’s seminal Brookside snog and Billie Pipers’s enthusiastic Secret Diary of a Call Girl scromping on the podium for best lesbian TV moments ever (we did the research).

6. Brooklyn Decker — Tennis pun, anyone?

What happens in Coyote Ugly again? Girl goes to New York to forge a career as a singer, then ends up dancing on a bar in a wet T-shirt contest? Something like that. And that’s a bit like what happened to Brooklyn Decker, except she successfully auditioned for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, married Andy Roddick and made a guest appearance on Ugly Betty. You go, girl!

Admittedly, Decker had been doing alright for herself before the move to the Big Apple, having been spotted in a shopping mall in Charlotte she was already modelling long before she headed to NY. She even picked up a 'Model of the Year' award in 2003. But then she hit the really big time.

7. Marisa Miller — Bikini queenie

Slightly pervily, perhaps, Marisa Miller was first snapped from afar by top Peruvian fashion photographer Mario Testino while she was surfing in California in 2001. The blonde clearly made an impression, and she was soon modelling tiny undies for Victoria's Secret and then signing up with Sports Illustrated, where she has become as firm a fixture in their annual Swimsuit issue as the glue that binds it together.

As much as modelling was doing for her, Marisa has been working on developing Marisa Miller the brand. So she launched a shoe line with Vans and became a spokesperson for Harley Davidson. She's a big fan of American Football, and has been in NFL adverts as well as hosting the NFL International Series held over here in London in 2010. She even made a television appearance in How I Met Your Mother as she helped the other Victoria’s Secret Angels work on their brands too. But perhaps the part of her brand that interests us the most is her Guitar Hero: World Tour ad that was too hot to air...

A huge fan of surfing, Marisa also plays volleyball and is into NASCAR and boxing, Welshman Joe Calzhage especially. She’s probably gutted now he’s retired. Perhaps unsurprisingly, then, she likes her music loud and screeching: one of her favourite bands is Californian growlers The Deftones and the first album she bought was by Nirvana, while she was even in a Puddle of Mud video. So basically you’ve got a gorgeous lingerie model who likes surfing, sports and loud music. It’s what you’ve been searching for your whole life.

8. Kelly Brook — Kent's finest bra model

Kelly Brook has nipped between modeling gigs to appearances in pop videos and remained loved by Britain. Even women like her, despite the fact she got her tits out for money.

Kelly's darted from presenting (Big Breakfast, MTV, Celebrity Love Island), to movies (School For Seduction, Three), TV acting (Smallville, Marple) and theatre (Calendar Girls, Eye Contact, Fat Pig). And bared her magnificent, 36DD breasts along the way, her finest moment remains – in our opinion – that magnificent topless beach scene in her 2005 film Three/Survival Island (it had a different name abroad).

Kelly Brook certainly milked her popularity with the fellas, having dated mega-movie star Billy Zane, who was in Titanic and erm, documentaries about the Titanic film. She then shacked up with Jason Statham who is now quite annoyingly dating Rosie Huntington-Whiteley too. After that it was egg-chaser Danny Cipriani, who she recently split with. Which meant hi-fives the world over.

FHM regulars will remember the epic beach shoot Kelly did for us in July 2010, with four actual lions (inspired by the World Cup). We chose her as she's modeled everything from underwear to swimwear, which isn't that varied, but she manages to look stunning in every picture, especially her Ultimo lingerie campaign.

Kelly has just finished the deep philosophical mind bender Piranha 3D. Apparently her most challenging scene was an underwater love scene with a porn star. Frankly, we could think of worse days at the office.

9. Nicole Scherzinger — PussyCat Galore

Not the kind of music you might expect from a girl who grew up in Kentucky – where are the banjos? – but this exotic beauty might surprise us yet having tried everything from rock to pop to, most successfully, pulsating r 'n' b. A former winner of the US version of Popstars, Nicole Scherzinger has long seemed destined for the big time, but it was as the leading light in "burlesque" American troupe the Pussycat Dolls that she really made it, thanks in no small part to four minutes of musical sex called Don't Cha. Her signature move is the booty shake, which may just have something to do with her mum, who was once a pro hula dancer.

Having outgrown her lead singer status and branched out solo, she went in search of the ultimate A-list celebrity’s accessory, another A-list celebrity. She found him in the shape of 2008 F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who was obviously just like every other bloke and never channel hopped past a music channel playing a Pussycat Dolls video. In 2010 the F1 Wags rivalry moved a step closer to home as Jenson Button brought Jessica Michibata in to the McLaren garage, but so far the pair have failed to scrap. Sadly.

Her solo career didn’t take off at quite the same speed though, with her debut album Her Name is Nicole being shelved after numerous delays. Still, you can’t keep a good cat down, and Scherzinger confirmed in 2010 that she was working on another solo album for release in 2011.

10. Irina Shayk — Well Illustrated

It always seems strange to think of how some of these supermodels started out; for Irina Shayk it was a beauty pageant in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. Modelling wasn’t some kind of first love for Irina though – she wanted to be a teacher of literature as a child because she liked making up stories and reading. What a waste of talent it would have been if she only ever stood up in front of a class of schoolkids.

Pushed on by her mum’s influence she went to a music school for seven years, and then started studying marketing at college but found it really boring so enrolled in a beauty school with her sister. In a twist of fate, next door to the school was a local modelling agency (convenient), and a scout noticed Irina, telling her to enter Miss Chelyabinsk 2004. She won, drew the attention of more scouts and within a year was modelling in Paris.

She started learning English and then started taking the modelling world by storm. In 2007 she became the face of Intimissimi lingerie, and also found herself appearing in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition; a tradition she has continued for every year since, eventually winding up on the cover of the 2011 issue. Seeing as this section is called “Why we love Irina Shayk” we can categorically state that it’s because of her immense hotness and has got absolutely nothing to do with the fact that she’s going out with Cristiano Ronaldo. Nobody’s perfect.

Top 10 Richest People In The world ( Forbes 2011)

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
This 25th year of tracking global wealth was one to remember. The 2011 Billionaires List breaks two records: total number of listees (1,210) and combined wealth ($4.5 trillion). This horde surpasses the gross domestic product of Germany, one of only six nations to have fewer billionaires this year. BRICs led the way: Brazil, Russia, India and China produced 108 of the 214 new names. These four nations are home to one in four members, up from one in 10 five years ago. Before this year only the U.S. had ever produced more than 100 billionaires. China now has 115 and Russia 101.

No. 1 Carlos Slim Helú & family

Net Worth: $74 billion
Source: Telecom
Citizenship: Mexico

Telecom tycoon who pounced on privatization of Mexico’s national telephone company in the 1990s becomes world’s richest person for the second time after coming in third place in 2009.

No. 2 Bill Gates

Net Worth: $56 billion
Source: Microsoft
Citizenship: U.S.

Microsoft mogul, futurist and America’s richest person has, with help from billionaire buddy Warren Buffett, convinced nearly 60 of the world’s wealthiest to sign his “Giving Pledge,” promising to donate the majority of their wealth to charity either during their lifetime or after death. He is no longer the planet’s richest person, but that’s because he’s given away $30 billion to his foundation. The Gates Foundation, the world’s most influential charity, tackles tuberculosis and polio and funds famine-resistant crops to fight hunger. He is calling for a higher sense of urgency in AIDS vaccine development and also pushing for better tools to rate teacher performance. Gates holds 70% of his wealth in investment fund Cascade, dabbling in everything from autos to hedge funds to Mexican Coke bottler Femsa; the rest of his wealth is held in Microsoft stock.

No. 3 Warren Buffett

Net Worth: $50 billion
Source: Berkshire Hathaway
Citizenship: U.S.

The venerable investor’s Berkshire Hathaway climbed more than 15% over the last year adding $3 billion to his fortune. The 80-year-old is still hunting big deals: “Our elephant gun has been reloaded, and my trigger finger is itchy.” Along with bridge partner Bill Gates, the Oracle of Omaha is coaxing America’s richest to pledge half their fortunes to charity.

No. 4 Bernard Arnault

Net Worth: $41 billion
Source: LVMH
Citizenship: France

The Lord of Luxe easily retains title of richest European. Fortune surged by $13.5 billion as shares of his luxury good outfit, LVMH, rose by more than half over the past year thanks to strong demand for luxuries like Dom Perignon champagne, Cognac Hennessy, Tag Heuer watches and Louis Vuitton accessories, particularly in Asian markets like Shanghai and Ho Chi Minh City. The group acquired 20% of Hermes last year; Arnault insists he is a friendly shareholder but Hermes sees it as hostile. In March the Bulgari family transferred its majority holding in its brand to LVMH in exchange for LVMH shares and board seats. LVMH fired Christian Dior designer John Galliano after he apparently made anti-semitic remarks. Renaissance man also owns yacht builder Royal Van Lent, a hotel in Courchevel; has stakes in French retailer Carrefour and French tour operator Go Voyages.

No. 5 Larry Ellison

Net Worth: $39.5 billion
Source: Oracle

Marathon: T-Minus 24 Hours

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 24 September 2011 0 komentar
Well, it's here! Pretty much exactly 24 hours until Go Time. I've trained, not blogged a lot about it like I thought I would, and I'm ready as I will ever be. My stomach has had butterflies flying around in it since last Sunday, but I am so excited to see this through!

Last night most of the runners gathered for a 'carb up sesh' at Daniela's (one of the runners and a dear friend) house. Of course, a gathering of women is never complete with out some talking around a circle and a few tears of emotion, right? All of us kind of said why we were doing this run, and my response was two reasons. Of course, I run for these women and our sisters in Uganda that have been terrorized and mutilated and need our support. But, I would be lying if I was not running for selfish reasons also. In school the two things I hated most were math, and running. I was always the one coming in last, heaving out of breath. I came last in everything sports-related. Basically, if my self-worth were based on my athletic confidence and ability, it would be ZERO. So I am doing this to prove to myself that I can tell my body what to do, not it tell me I can't. Because I can. The moment I ran 6km, I knew I could do this. And now, my furthest run has been 16km (a miracle in itself) and tomorrow I will run 21km.

Simply put, my purpose of running this race is to raise money for these women that have had body parts severed, been raped by numerous LRA soldiers, ostracized from their communities and had their dignity stolen from them. I know it doesn't exactly hit home for many here in Canada, but for me it hits home as a woman. How blessed am I to have been born and raised in this country, a place of freedom where I can walk in confidence and with out fear? A place that I don't have a constant, daily fear of being harmed? How blessed am I that I have a nose, mouth, ears? Legs to run? How could I not inconvenience myself to train for a race, if it means I can help someone that desperately needs it? I am able, so I must.

Last night all the runners were given these special, amazing little cards that a woman in Texas and her four year old daughter made for us. Just to bless us and encourage us! Each one is hand-made, different, and has a hand written (not printed on a computer) note, and this amazing Franciscan Benediction. I think we were all in tears when Tina read aloud:

May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers, half truths and superficial relationships,So that we may live deep within our hearts,May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people,So that we may work for injustice, freedom and peace.May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger and war,So that we may reach out our hands to comfort them and to turn their pain to joy. And may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we can make a difference in the world,So that we can do what others claim cannot be done.Amen.

I think that pretty much sums up this whole cause.

I would LOVE it if you could donate to our cause and sponsor me in my run. Please click here: http://shelovesmagazine.com/she-loves-half-marathon/

Thank you in advance!
